Law and Plan

Sports are popular throughout the world and can even be considered one of the world’s common cultures. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) is in charge of the overall administration of sports such as the preparation of an environment where people can become familiar with sports, the improvement of international competitiveness such as by raising Olympic athletes, the improvement of the physical strength of children and the enhancement of physical education in school. In addition, MEXT formulated the Basic Plan for the Promotion of Sports based on the Sports Promotion Act enacted in 1961. In 2010, MEXT had worked to formulate the national physical activity strategy to define the basic direction of the nation’s sports policy in the future, with a view to reviewing the current “Sports Promotion Act” and replacing it with a newly formulated “Basic Sports Act”.
