Project Overview

Science and technology have made remarkable progress in information science fields such as IoT, big data, and AI in recent years, and efforts to introduce and link information science technologies in the field of seismology have been launched both inside and outside Japan. "The Promotion of Earthquake Research -Basic Comprehensive Policy for the Promotion of Earthquake Observation, Measurement, Surveys and Research (Third Period)-" was formulated by the Headquarters for Earthquake Research Promotion in May 2019. This policy also expresses the hope that earthquake research in Japan will make use of new science and technology to contribute to society by preventing or reducing the impact of natural disasters.

With this in mind, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) launched the “Seismology TowArd Research innovation with data of Earthquake project” (“STAR-E Project” hereafter) in 2021, with the goal of promoting earthquake researches that incorporate the latest findings in the field of information science. In addition to promoting multiple research topics in order to generate innovative and creative research outcomes, the goal of the STAR-E Project is to contribute to the development of the information science and seismology fields (including developing the next generation of researchers). This project contributes to such development through efforts to promote cooperation in both fields, such as holding research forums for researchers in both fields and operating a platform for sharing information.
