On July 29, MEXT Minister MORIYAMA Masahito attended the first meeting of the Japan-Ukraine Joint Commission on Education, Science and Technology Cooperation also attended by Ukraine’s Minister of Education and Science, Oksen Lisovyi. The heads exchanged views on areas in need of advancing collaboration in the fields of education, science, and technology. A Joint Summary was signed (as attached).

During the meeting, Minister Moriyama highlighted invitations of Ukrainian high school students, university students and researchers to Japan, donations of Japanese picture books and support for their publication, cooperation in international joint research, and requested Ukraine’s cooperation in these efforts.

The Joint Commission on Japan-Ukraine Education, Science and Technology Cooperation was established on occasion of the Japan-Ukraine Conference on Promotion of Economic Reconstruction was held in Tokyo this February. The first bilateral Joint Commission was held in Kyiv, Ukraine, and was co-chaired by Minister Moriyama.

The MEXT Minister also met with Ukraine’s Acting Minister of Culture and Information Policy, Rostyslav Karandieiev, and exchanged views on cultural facilities, restoration of cultural properties and cultural exchange between the two countries. Minister Moriyama conveyed his support for the protection of Ukraine's cultural heritage and in holding performances in Japan.

Based on the results of this these meetings, MEXT will work on the “MEXT Support Package for Ukraine” to contribute to Ukraine in areas under MEXT's jurisdiction.
