On August 8, Jill Hruby, Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and Administrator of the National Security Administration paid a courtesy visit to YANAGI Takashi, Deputy Minister of MEXT to congratulate the completion of the removal of all highly enriched uranium fuels from the Kyoto University Critical Assembly (KUCA).

 The Kyoto University Critical Assembly (KUCA) is a research reactor established at the university’s Institute for Integrated Radiation and Nuclear Science. The KUCA facility is used by students for basic research on reactor engineering.
 
 At the 4th Nuclear Security Summit held in Washington from March 31 to April 1, 2016, Japan and the U.S. issued a joint statement on nuclear security cooperation. The agreement includes the transfer of highly enriched uranium fuels removed from the KUCA facility to the U.S., which aims to contribute to efforts of minimizing nuclear material stockpiles worldwide.
 
 On August 8, 2022, Jill Hruby, Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and Administrator of the National Security Administration paid a courtesy visit to YANAGI Takashi, Deputy Minister of MEXT, and visited Kyoto University on the following day. Administrator Hruby applauded the completion of the removal of nuclear material under bilateral cooperation, while confirming the need to further advance bilateral cooperation in strengthening global nuclear security.
