The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT) convened “Africa-Japan Ministerial Dialogue Meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development Goals (STI for SDGs)” as an official side event of the 7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7) on August 28-30, 2019.

※TICAD stands for the Tokyo International Conference on African Development. The government of Japan has been leading this conference since 1993, which is co-hosted by the United Nations (UN), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World Bank and African Union Commission (AUC).

Overview of the meeting

After opening remarks by MEXT Minister SHIBAYAMA Masahiko, Prof. KISHI Teruo, Science and Technology Advisor to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Prof. Sarah Anyang AGBOR, Commissioner for Human Resources, Science and Technology at the African Union Commission (AUC), the dialogue meeting proceeded according to the agenda.

Session 2: Good practices on Japan-Africa S&T cooperation
Session 3: Dialogue

This meeting was organized not only by MEXT but also in cooperation with MOFA and CAO, which showed a positive attitude of the Japanese government to promote cooperation on STI for SDGs between Japan and African countries.
