10 Thai university students from King Mongkut’s University of Technology in North Bangkok paid a courtesy visit to MEXT Minister, HAGIUDA Koichi, on October 23rd. The students arrived in Japan under the Japan-Asia Youth Science Exchange Project, “Sakura Science Plan”, managed by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) since 2014.
The students are scheduled to visit research laboratories and meet students from various host organizations including the University of Electro-Communications (UEC). The students will also visit the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, make presentations and experience Japanese culture.

One student said they were looking forward to seeing cutting-edge research carried out at Japanese universities, and to see how the Japanese students perform their research and studies. Another student said in the future, they hope to be able to study at a Japanese university as an exchange student.

Minister Hagiuda said science and technology offers many ways for Japan and Thailand to cooperate beyond borders and hopes the students will serve as a bridge between both countries.

*The “Sakura Science Plan” invites students and researchers from Asian countries and regions to Japan over a short term to experience science and technology research at Japanese research organizations, universities and other institutions. It aims to raise interest in Japan’s cutting-edge technology and to help contribute to securing outstanding researchers in Japanese universities, research organizations and industries. Launched in 2014, a total of about 300,000 students, including this year’s Thai students, have participated in the program.
