The International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) programme of IOC-UNESCO has recently established a new structural element within IODE, the IODE Associate Data Unit (ADU), next to the already existing National Oceanographic Data Centres (NODC). ADUs can be projects, programmes, institutions or organizations. The intention is to bring in the wider ocean research and observation communities as key stakeholders of the IODE network, taking into account the growth of ocean research and observation programmes and projects, and the ability of these projects to establish data systems.

The Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) is a project of IODE. The OBIS Steering Group recommended that OBIS nodes (national, regional or thematic data assembly centres for OBIS) should operate under the activities of NODCs or apply for an ADU status under IODE.

JAMSTEC signed an implementing agreement with OBIS to establish the Japan OBIS node in 2010. However, because OBIS is now fully operational under IODE, we would like all the existing OBIS nodes to re-confirm their commitments as OBIS nodes under the UNESCO/IOC/IODE umbrella.

I hope JAMSTEC will continue its valuable contribution to OBIS. You can find more information on ADUs at http://www.iode.org/adu and on OBIS nodes as well as the application form at:http://www.iobis.org/adu.
