3. Policies on the Japanese Language, Copyright and Religious Affairs
(1) Policy Implementations on the Japanese Language

A national language composes the foundation of the culture of a nation, and thus it is necessary to promote national language policies appropriate to the changes of the times, in order for the people to rationally lead common social life. The Agency for Cultural Affairs therefore has established the National Language Council, and implements national language policies on the basis of highly knowledgeable, specialized and fair deliberations at the Council. The Council is now deliberating upon the expression of words borrowed from abroad. It also attempts to popularize proper national language through the publication of a series of booklets called "Series on Language" and a video tape series entitled "Toward Richer, More Beautiful Language. "In addition, the National Language Research Institute is engaged in scientific survey and research on the national language, research on the teaching of the Japanese language and the training of Japanese language teachers.
