People's interest in the arts and culture has increased remarkably in recent years and thus their further promotion has become an important issue.

In order to promote creative activity in the arts. the Agency for Cultural Affairs subsidizes performances and other activities of orchestras, ballets and operas, organizes performances of these arts which take place abroad or in large scale in Japan in cooperation with companies and other private partners, and executes the National Art Festival as well as programs for the training of artists and recognition of their achievements.

Also in order to promote regional culture, it executes the Traveling Art Festival and other touring programs. It also subsidizes public cultural facilities, holds the National Culture Festival and the National Upper Secondary School Culture Festival.
