4. Organizations in Scientific Research


The organizations involved in scientific research in Japan consist of university faculties and graduate schools, inter-university research institutes, research institutes attached to universities, research facilities attached to university faculties, research institutes under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, and research institutes founded by scientific research juridical persons, etc. In view of the increasing needs for joint research in many areas which have emerged with the advancement or research methodologies, the promotion of research system has been made with particular emphasis on this point.

Academic associations, which are bodies voluntarily organized by individual researchers across the institutional boundaries, fulfill an important role, for example, in research evaluation, information exchange and personal contacts.
