Supporting regional sport commission activities

Sport is strategically used in many projects nationwide to stimulate town building and regional revitalization by combining sport with local resources such as landscapes, environment and culture. Some representative examples include travelling to watch or participate in sport, sports tourism which combines sport and sightseeing, regional sport competitions and events which aim to attract people from outside, inviting major domestic and international sporting events and inviting professional and university sport teams for sporting camps.
These programs are advanced by regional sport commissions comprised of regional public organizations and private businesses such as tourism businesses. Regional sport commissions play a central role in advancing regional development.
The JSA has been supporting activities of regional sport commissions since FY2015. A survey by the JSA has found there are 83 regional sport commissions nationwide as of September 2017. The Second Sport Basic Plan aims to further increase their number up to 170 by the end of 2021.
