PART II Recent Trends and Developments in Government Policies in Education, Science and Culture
Chapter 11. The Shift to an Information-Oriented Society: Implications for Education, Science, Culture, and Sports
Section 4. Promoting the Supply of Lifelong Learning Information and Scientific Research Information and Developing Information Networks
2. Promoting Swift and Accurate Access to Science Information

The development of science information systems to provide researchers in universities and other institutions with swift and accurate access to science information is an important priority in this time of a rapid shift to an information-oriented society. The Ministry of Education, Science and Culture is actively developing a comprehensive nationwide science information system with the National Center for Science Information System as its hub. The Ministry is also working to enhance and internationalize the science information network that will provide the telecommunications infrastructure for this system.

In addition, the Ministry is working to improve campus information networks (campus LANs), which connect computers in various facilities via high-speed data links, including fiber-optic cables, thereby speeding up the exchange of science information. Campus LANs were to be installed in all national universities and interuniversity research institutes by the end of fiscal 1994, with the exception of five national universities and other institutions that were soon to be relocated (see part 2, chapter 6, section 5).
