3. Sponsoring Sports Events

(1) National Sports and Recreation Festivals

National Sports and Recreation Festivals are national events that provide large numbers of people with opportunities to enjoy sports and recreation. These events also help foster interaction among sports enthusiasts of all ages.

(2) Sports-for-All Conventions

The Sports-for-All Convention '94, in March 1994, had the theme "Broadening and Deepening Sports-for-All." The convention provided an opportunity for people involved in sports-related activities in industry, government, and academia to discuss research and share information about issues relating to the promotion of sports-for-all.

(3) Promoting Sports-for-All at the Local Level

Prefectural governments and municipalities implement a variety of sports programs, including training courses and tournaments, with the aim of promoting sports activities in local communities. The Ministry of Education, Science and Culture provides subsidies for these programs. Since fiscal 1993 subsidies have been provided for Family Sports Promotion Programs ,*1 which are designed to enhance interaction within families and contact among families in local communities through family-oriented sports activities.

A new type of program introduced in fiscal 1994 is Workplace Sports Facility Utilization Promotion Programs . *2 The aim of these programs is to encourage the owners of workplace sports facilities in municipalities to make those facilities available for community use.

*1 The purpose of Family Sports Promotion Programs is to foster family interaction through a variety of activities, such as parent-child walking rallies and skiing classes, which are designed to build health and strength while reinforcing parent-child relationships, and family sports training courses, which reflect the diversification of sports and provide residents with opportunities to enjoy family participation in new types of sports.

*2 Workplace Sports Facility Utilization Promotion Programs feature a variety of sports events and training courses held in workplace sports facilities with the aim of promoting interaction between business corporations and the community through sports. Management committees whose members include representatives of companies, the local community, and local governments are formed to facilitate the utilization of these facilities.
