Japan participates in various international cooperative research projects categorized as : (1) cooperative projects based on bilateral agreements, (2) research programs under the auspices of the International Council of Scientific Unions(ICSU), and (3) cooperative research using the Overseas Scientific Research category of the Ministry's grants-in-aid for scientific research. In addition, it supports a range of international cooperative projects through international organizations and the Antarctic observation project.
