2 Private Donations and Endowed Chairs and Divisions


National universities are now authorized to receive donations from outside sources, such as private companies, for the purpose of encouraging scientific research in the universities. These donations have been flexibly utilized for research and educational activities in accordance with the objectives of the donors. The total amount of donations is increasing year by year.

A system of endowed chairs and divisions was introduced in 1987, with the objectives of promoting and enriching the educational and research activities in universities. As of August 1991, 36 chairs and 9 divisions were set up in a total of13 national universities and two divisions were set up in two national inter-university research institutes.
