2 Career Selection of Young Researchers and Their Research Environments

In 1990 the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture conducted a survey among young researchers on the factors influencing the selection of their careers and research environments. The result of this survey found that while an increasingly high ratio of students seeking master's degrees desire to enter the private sector, many of those seeking doctor's degrees still intend to become university teachers. Graduate students have come to regard the university as inferior to private companies in terms of research environments and economic benefits. It is feared that this belief may affect measures for training and securing university researchers.
