Chapter 7. Promotion of Physical Education and Sports
1. Overview


Physical education and sports contribute to the sound development of mind and body, and serve in the formation of an optimistic, affluent and active society. People's interest in and need for sports have been increased and diversified with the recent rapid changes in society. People who wish to enjoy sports for life time are increasing in number, partly due to the increase of the elderly. Also, in view of the remarkable improvement of the international level of athletic sports, the strengthening of the competitiveness of Japanese athletes has become a pressing issue.

In the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, the Health and Physical Education Council is deliberating on the promotional policies of sports for the 21st century, and the Ministry shall comprehensively promote various policies on sports for all, athletic sports and physical education and sports in schools.
