Chapter 2. Promoting Lifelong Learning
3. Lifelong Learning and Schools
(1) Lifelong Learning and the Role of Schools
Schools have two important roles to play in the system of lifelong
learning. One is to lay the foundation for people who keep learning throughout
life ; especially placing more emphasis on basic knowlege and skills at elementary
and secondary education level and the encouragement of developing individual
traits are the basic principles for the course of Study revised in 1989. The
other is to offer various learning opportunities in lifelong learning ; various
activities have been initiated including the effort to accept working adults
into schools.
