CHAPTER 5 EDUCATIONAL REFORMS IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES AND THE FUTURE EDUCATION IN JAPAN
2 School Population in Future
(1) Number of Pupils Receiving Compulsory Education

The number of births in Japan showed a rapid increase in 1946 and1947 and since then it decreased each year until 1955. Consequently, the number of pupils in elementary schools had its peak in 1958, and then continued to decline until it became constant in 1965. The number of lower secondary school pupils reached a peak from 1961 to 1963, and then declined each year. After 1970 there will be little change in lower secondary school enrolments.
