Section 2 Educational Reform Q&A
Q15
Enhancing Manufacturing Education

First, in the younger stages, it is important to impart the joy of making things and to raise interest in manufacturing. In elementary and lower secondary school classes, we are working to enhance hand-on learning activities, such as making bamboo crafts and ceramics and visiting factories, through utilization of the newly created Period of Integrated Study. We are also looking to enrich activities conducted outside of school, such as hands-on activities (involving seeing, touching, testing, and thinking) at museums and elsewhere, as well as experimental science programs in citizens' public halls, science museums and open classrooms.

At technical high schools and other upper secondary schools, we are aiming to enhance education designed to improve practical manufacturing ability through the expansion of internships, active hiring of outstanding manufacturing technicians as lecturers, and the development of experimentation and training facilities and equipment suited to the advances of technology.

We are also working to provide high-level practical education about manufacturing at universities, colleges of technology and special training colleges, by strengthening cooperation with businesses, making it possible for students to carry out studies and research regarding manufacturing on topics of their own choosing, and through other efforts.

Furthermore, we are cooperating with the Science and Technology Agency to promote the holding and support of hands-on events, including robot technology competitions where students become familiar with advanced science and technology while enjoying themselves.
