Section 2 Educational Reform Q&A
Q2
Educational Reform at the Primary, and Lower and Upper Secondary School Levels

Until now, we have reviewed educational curricula at the primary, and lower and upper secondary school levels with an aim to foster "zest for living" with "room to grow." The content of the new curriculum starting from fiscal 2002 is narrowed down to fundamental and basis elements. Its goals are for students to completely learn the content, as well as to enhance education that encourages individuality and cultivate "zest for living," including a rich character and the "ability to learn and think for oneself."

We have also increased the number of elective subjects at upper secondary schools to allow each student to develop individuality and have a variety of choices, and are incorporating a six-year unified lower and upper secondary school education system in addition to existing lower and upper secondary schools.
