The public can submit applications for subsidies from the Japan Arts Fund every fiscal year. Details regarding the method and terms of applications, the types of activities covered by the subsidies and so on are explained in the pamphlet "Application Information", which is published annually.

The main activities for which subsidies may be granted are as follows:

1)staging of modern performing arts and cinematic productions that are likely to be well accepted by the general public,2) pioneering of experimental creative artistic activities which cultivate new fields,

3) performances and exhibitions sponsored by local cultural facilities or activities planned and participated in by local citizens cultural organizations and

4) preservation and utilization of cultural properties in local areas. These subsidies are granted for a wide variety of artists and organizations engaged in artistic or cultural activities.

Detailed information regarding the eligibility of artists and organizations are described in the application information pamphlet.

As to the selection process for subsidy recipients, a steering committee made up of individuals from the realm of art and culture and experienced scholars determine, after a fair examination of all applications from an expert viewpoint, the successful recipients and the amount of their subsidy. The total amount of funds allocated for the provision of subsidies in fiscal 1992.the third year after the fund's establishment, was 3,020 million yen (TableI- 1 - 5). It must be added that greater efforts have been necessary to maintain a certain level of subsidy with the recent declining interest rate.
