Science of optimal health (“genki” in Japanese): Elucidating and controlling life phenomena to maintain active and resilient bodies

Overview

Japan’s super-aging society has highlighted a variety of issues, such as the decline in individual quality of life (QOL), and increased costs of nursing and medical care. As an approach to solving these social issues, the development of technologies that help maintain and improve health will not only enable the extension of a healthy life expectancy but will help in preventing onset of multiple diseases and be beneficial for the medical economy. Meanwhile, a comprehensive understanding of what defines a healthy condition has not progressed, as this area of research is also in the development stage internationally. As such, this Strategic Objective aims to promote comprehensive research from the perspective of health, rather than focusing on disease which has been the conventional approach up until now. By accumulating scientific evidence on maintenance and improvement of health, we aim to contribute to the development of medical treatment and other means that helps people maintain an active and resilient body and mind.
