  In relations with Russia,a new"Japan-Russia Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement"was signed in September2000to replace the old agreement,and the eighth meeting of the Japan-Russia Joint Committee on Science and Technology was held in Moscow in January2003based on this new agreement.

  In relations with Poland,the fifth meeting of joint committee on Japan-Poland Science and Technology Cooperation was held in Tokyo in March2003based on the Agreement between the Government of Japan and the Government of the Polish People's Republic on Cooperation in the Field of Science and Technology signed in1978.The committee exchanged opinions on each country's science and technology policies and cooperation activities.

  In relations with Eastern European countries,science and technology cooperation agreements have been signed with the Czech Republic,Hungary,Rumania,Bulgaria,and Slovakia,among others,and cooperation is being carried out in areas of the implementation of science and technology meetings between governments,and exchanges of researchers.

  In addition,in relations with the Republic of South Africa,an agreement was reached in October2001to commence negotiations toward signing a science and technology cooperation agreement;negotiations are currently underway.
