The result of the comparison of the ratio of people who are interested in science and technology revealed that on the items of 1) new scientific discoveries, 2) discoveries and development of new technologies, 3) new medical discoveries, and 4) issues of environmental pollution, Japan was listed at the bottom ( Fig. 25 ).
We need to continue to promote the understanding of the public at large on the basic principles and new trends of science and technology.

The level of Japanese public's interest in science and technology is, though on the rise, not necessarily high when compared with other countries. It is feared that the thus situation could increase people who have negative images about science and technology like "the pace of scientific progress is too rapid to follow," or people who have anxiety or distrust in scientific advancement.
It is required to cultivate confidence of the public in science and technology by not only arousing their interest as the "recipient" of science and technology, but also arousing their participatory awareness as the "maker in collaboration" with experts.
It is important that the latest and/or difficult scientific issues be plainly explained in relation to the people's life. Scientific journalists play a key role in explaining to the public about science and technology in a simple way, and making proposals for science and technology.
The NPO and the like are expected to consolidate public opinions on science and technology through their activities closely linked to people, and have these opinions reflected in the administration of science and technology.
Further more, it is vital to promote science and technology, and R&D, with an overall view fusioning the field of natural science and that of humanities and social science.
