Chapter 2 Current State and Issue of Japan's Science and Technology
Section 6 Public Understanding of Science and Technology

To gain the public understanding on science and technology, it is required to narrate in terms that are easy to understand not only contents and usefulness of science and technology but also risks arising from technologies. In particular, in light of the remarkable advancement of science and technology in recent years, it is by no means easy to understand, and as a result, there is a growing tendency for a larger knowledge divides between the science and technology-related parties and the general public.

Thus, in order to develop science and technology in Japan, it is vital to arouse young people and the public at large, at every opportunity, to be interested in science and technology that have much important bearing on their daily lives, and thereby to attempt to promote their understanding. Valuing creativity, respecting its free manifestation, and the culture and climate that look forward to long-run researches and achievements are also important elements.

Together with the culture and climate that value creativity, the public understanding is the social foundation to support the creativity of science and technology.

To understand the effect of science and technology upon society and environment, the stance of science and technology married with humanities and social science is required.
