Chapter 2 Current State and Issue of Japan's Science and Technology
Section 3 Research Infrastructure
3. Intellectual Infrastructure

The promotion of advanced, original and basic R&D calls for the systematic development of intellectual infrastructure such as research materials and measurement standards to support stable and effective R&D activities.

(Biological Resources)

At the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences, and the Product Assessment Technology Center, we are planning to establish footholds that will play a central role in the bio-resources projects of Japan. In this context, in cooperation with relevant ministries and agencies, we are contemplating the development of the system to manage and provide biogenetic resources such as experimental plants and animals, farm products, microbe and DNA.

(Weight and Measurement Standards and Reference Material)

Securing the objectivity of the evaluation results of measuring, analyzing and testing by the correct use of the weight and measurement standards and reference material is an important basis for the smooth promotion of R&D activities. Therefore Japan is pursuing the enriching and strengthening of the structure for development and supply to reach the U.S. standard before 2010.

Regarding the development of the safety control of chemical substance, and matters related to human life, welfare, and material, we are tackling these issues by setting up concrete objectives and development plans.
