Participants in the 1996 MESSC survey who indicated that they were involved in structured, ongoing learning activities were asked to state how long they had been engaged in those activities. Responses to the question varied widely, with some respondents indicating that they had been studying for 10 years or more ( Figure 2.11 ).
As discussed in subsection 6, below, many people wish to continue their present learning activities, and the majority want to advance to higher levels. These results suggest that those who commence structured, ongoing learning activities can be expected to continue learning for a considerable time.
