Chapter 9. Toward a Culture-Communicating Society
Section 6. National Cultural Facilities
1. National Museums and National Museums of Art

National museums and national museums of art are operated as public facilities that can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages, from children to the elderly. They also provide comprehensive, high-quality exhibitions. It is necessary to conduct research regarding the future roles of these museums and to manage and develop them further from the user's perspective. Priorities include the development of exhibition facilities that can meet community needs and are worthy to represent Japan and the enhancement of museum facilities and activities, including exhibits, research and surveys, and publicity and information systems.

Construction of the Heisei Annex (provisional name) and the Gallery of Horyu-ji Treasures of the Tokyo National Museum and the Second Annex (provisional name) of the Nara National Museum began under the fiscal 1993 supplementary budget. Work on these projects continued in fiscal 1994, along with a project to improve exhibition facilities at the National Museum of Western Art. Efforts also focused on the expansion of exhibits and the acquisition of works of art.
