PART II Recent Trends and Developments in Government Policies in Education, Science and Culture
Chapter 4. Toward Diversified Development of Higher Education
Section 4. Support for Human-Resource Development Through Student Aid Programs
2. Programs Administered by Incorporated Nonprofit Organizations, Local Governments, School Corporations, and Other Organizations

The results of a survey on student aid programs conducted every four years indicate that student aid programs were being administered by 4,307 organizations, including incorporated nonprofit organizations, local governments, and school corporations, as of March 1992. Recipients of such aid totaled 288,505, and the amount disbursed totaled 67,218 million yen( Table II.4.6).

While student aid programs administered by the Japan Scholarship Foundation are general and inclusive, the programs of incorporated nonprofit organizations and other organizations have characteristics that reflect the diverse aims for which they were established. These programs have played an extremely significant role in the development of student aid in Japan, and it is hoped that they will continue to develop and expand in the future.
