Chapter 3. Enhancing Primary and Secondary Education
Section 11. Developing Spacious and Pleasant School Facilities and Attractive Teaching Materials
2. Improving Teaching Materials

The "List of Standard Instructional Aids and Equipment" specifies the items and quantities of teaching materials necessary for implementation of the new Courses of Study in public schools. Municipalities provide schools with teaching materials independently, according to the needs of their schools, using the list as a reference. Approximately 800 billion yen is being budgeted in the local allocation tax over a 10-year period from fiscal 1991 to fiscal 2000 for the systematic improvement of teaching materials. In fiscal 1994 approximately 71.4 billion yen was appropriated for this purpose.
