Chapter 2. The Aims of the Five-Day School Week
Section 2. Implementation of the Monthly Five-Day School Week
2. Implementation in Private Schools

According to a survey of private schools conducted by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture in April 1994, 61.2% of upper secondary schools, 43.0% of lower secondary schools, and 75.9% of elementary schools had implemented the five-day school week ( Figure I.2.2.). Private schools are permitted to set their school holidays in accordance with their own school regulations. In view of the aims of the five-day school week, however, it is desirable that private schools work in step with public schools.
