4. Recognition of Artists


Another important policy area involves the proper assessment of the roles played by Japan's artists both in society and in the country as a whole and the recognition of the artists' superior achievements in their respective fields.

Some forms of recognition of distinguished artists include: the Order of Culture, the title of Person of Cultural Merit, membership in the Japan Art Academy, Imperial Prizes. the Japan Art Academy Prize, the Art Encouragement Prize by the Minister of Education, Science and Culture and the Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists by the Minister of Education, Science and Culture (Table I-2-1).
