6 Promotion of International Scientific Exchange
1 Exchange of Researchers


The Ministry has since carried out various programs for international exchange of researchers, which include: providing Japanese researchers with fellowships and travel grants for research abroad; accepting foreign teachers and lecturers as members of research and teaching staff of Japanese universities and related research institutes; inviting foreign researchers for research in Japan; sending Japanese researchers abroad for participation in scientific meetings; subsidizing the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science for the administration of its various international programs. The Ministry created a Fellowship Program for Foreign Researchers, in 1988, under which Japanese universities are able to invite young foreign researchers for a year, In 1990, 170 foreign researchers were invited to universities in Japan through this program.

Under these programs in 1989, a total of 6,700 Japanese researchers were sent abroad and 3,500 foreign researchers were hosted in Japan. The scale of exchange is steadily increasing every year.
