Research institutes attached to universities aim at promoting scientific research in specialized fields of science. Such research institutes consist of several research departments which correspond to chairs (teaching/research units) at undergraduate faculties.
Besides research institutes attached to universities and national inter-university research institutes, there are other types of university-related research organizations. In the case of national universities these include; 1) research institutes which, though attached to a certain university, are open for joint use to all university researchers in Japan, 2) educational and scientific research centers for joint use by all faculties and departments of the university, and 3) laboratories attached to the faculty or research institutes affiliated with the university.
