Chapter 10. Education in an Information Oriented Society
3. Use of New Information Media

New information media, such as computers, videotex and high-definition television, possess open possibilities for the diversification of learning opportunities and the improved efficiency of learning process, through the development of new learning systems transcending the limitation or time and space and the enrichment of individualized instruction in school education.

The use of computers in school education has been tried in varieties of modes, including CAI, or the computer assisted instruction. The important issues of research and development of good software and a system for their dissemination, however, remain unsolved. The Ministry designated 25 pilot schools in FY 1989 for experimental research on these issues.

As regards the University of the Air, the question of broadening the broadcast wave coverage has been under consideration and the research and development of content and methods of university education using various media have been carried out at the National Institute of Multimedia Education.

In addition. the Ministry is promoting research on the educational use of respective new media, as well as undertaking basic research on the development of effective teaching materials relating multiple means of information such as computers, VTRs and video-discs.
