Chapter 9. Internationalization of Education, Culture and Sports
1. Overview


In order that nations prosper in the deepening interdependence in the world today, each national is required to understand other countries through learning history, culture and customs among one another. Well planned and continuous international exchange and cooperation programs in the fields of education, culture and sports are of vital importance for developing such international understanding.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Culture is promoting the internationalization of education, culture and sports, with emphasis on 1) the cultivation of Japanese people who can earn respect in the international community, 2) the promotion of exchange with foreign countries in the fields of education, culture and sports,3) the promotion of international exchange of students, 4) the stregthening of teaching the Japanese language to foreigners, and 5) the strengthening of education programs for Japanese children living abroad and for those who have returned from abroad.
