With the aging of society, in order to make the life for the elderly more meaningful, places for learning and social participation are being expanded. Recently, as places for systematic learning, classes and courses sponsored by boards of education are increasing. In order to meet diversified and advanced learning of the elderly, the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture has opened "Long-life Colleges" providing courses in broad fields and of high quality, in cooperation with universities of the region. In addition, the Ministry has established an advisory body on the promotion of education of the elderly and been carrying out such programs as classes for the elderly, the training or volunteers, the effective use of elderlv manpower, and interaction between the elderly and the young, in order to realize rich and energetic long-life society in which the elderly can live a worthwhile life.
