2 APPENDIX 2. REFERENTIAL CHART

Notes on Various Social and Economic Indicators

The figures indicating trends in school population, placement of educational personnel and school education expenditures vary fairly considerably from prefecture to prefecture. These differences are largely due to the differences in social and economic conditions in which educationa1 activities in individual prefecture take place.

Therefore, in order to throw light upon the differences in educational indicators based on constituent elements of school education in each prefecture, it is necessary to analyze the differences in various indicators on the social and economic conditions from which they are derived.

Because of their relevance to school education, six indicators of social and economic conditions in each individual prefecture are shown on the following page. The relationship between the degree of "urbanization" and education is shown on the premise that those prefectures for which the indicators are all above the national average are regarded as the so-called highly "urbanized" prefectures and vice versa.
