Chart. 1-28. Enrollment in Institutions of Higher Education

The number of students enrolled in institutions of higher education (undergraduate courses, graduate schools, junior colleges, technical colleges, etc.) has been showing a consistent growth during the last 15 years, reaching 2,137,000 persons in 1975.

Of these students in 1975, university students numbered 1,734,000 (including the students of graduate schools, advanced courses, short-term courses, etc.), 2.8 times the 1960 level, and junior college students numbered 354,000 (including the students in advanced courses, short-term courses, etc.), 4.2 times the 1960 level, for a total of 2,088,000 or 2.9 times the 1960 level.

The proportion of private school students in the total enrollment in institutions of higher education rose from 66.0% in 1960 to 77.4% in 1975. The proportion is rising year by year both among university students and junior college students, reaching 76% and 91% respectively in 1975, thus suggesting a large weight borne by private schools in the quantitative expansion of higher education.
