Transition in the expenditures for school education in Japan is shown in Chart 0-5.
School education expenditures (expenses for education in national, local and private schools, including those for miscellaneous schools as well as those for research institutes and hospitals attached to universities) surpassed \5,600 billion in fiscal 1973.
School education expenditures, swelling year after year since fiscal 1960, multiplied about 8 times from fiscal 1960 through fiscal 1973. Their proportion to the national income stood at 6.2% in fiscal 1973, with 5.3% as the highest. It signifies that growth of school education expenditures generally has kept pace with that of the national income. Social welfare expenditures (net total expenses disbursed by national and local governments for social welfare), incidentally, totaled \5,060 billion in fiscal 1973, representing 5.5% of the national income.
