School education in Japan has demonstrated a remarkable progress in the last century and played an important role in the enhancement of the people's resources and abilities and in national and social development. And at present, with marked expansion made in its quantitative scale, Japan's educational standards have, in addition, come to be ranked high internationally in terms of the degree to which education has been popularized.
While the present state and future problems of school education are o be dealt with in subsequent chapters from various viewpoints, a general survey is to be made herewith on the scale of personnel, material and financial resources, in which school education of all levels - from the level of kindergartens to universities and colleges - is undertaken.
