In March, 1976, the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science and Culture published an official report entitled Wagakuni no Kyoiku Suijun (Educational Standards in Japan). It is the fourth edition of the same title, following the last three editions published in 1959, 1964, and 1970, respectively. The quinquennial reports are intended to inform the general public in Japan of developments in education in their various quantitative and qualitative aspects, as compared with those in other selected countries.

The present volume is an English version of the fourth report and includes comprehensive factual information on the development of education in Japan during the last five years in its various aspects, as well as a bird's eye view of educational development during the past thirty years.

It is hoped that this book will be of use and value to foreign readers who are interested in education in this country.
