In recent years the number of entrants into universities and junior colleges has increased considerably, reaching 457,000 in 1969, 2.4 times as many as in 1959.This accounts for 21.4% of the corresponding age group. The increase was especially marked between 1965 and 1967, as students who were born in the baby boom from 1947 to 1949 graduated from upper secondary school. Since 1968.upper secondary school graduates have been decreasing in number. However, due to the increasing demand for higher education, entrants into universities and junior colleges are expected to continue increasing in the future.
Of the 1969 total, 329,000 entered universities, and 128,000 junior colleges, being two and three times as many as in 1959, respectively. The increase was especially marked for junior colleges. This is, as will be seen later, closely related to the rapid increase in the number of female entrants into junior colleges.
Entrants into private universities and junior colleges have increased from 70%of total entrants in 1959 to 82%in 1969. From 1965 to 1968 when the number of those who wanted to enter institutions of higher education increased rapidly, entrants into private universities and junior colleges increased considerably. Thus, the expansion of opportunities for higher education during this period was achieved mainly by private institutions.
