(1) Percentage of Upper Secondary School Graduates Entering Institutions of Higher Education

As mentioned in the preceding pages, the percentage of the age group entering institutions of higher education has increased. But it differed very much according to prefecture, ranging in 1963 from 36.1 per cent in Tokyo to 8.8 per cent in Aomori prefecture. This percentage corresponds closely to the prefectural income per capita and to the industrial structure as indicated by the percentage of total employed population engaged in secondary and tertiary sectors.
