Johoji Community Classroom for Children (Johoji Town, Iwate Prefecture)(notes)

After classes on weekdays until 5:00 pm, children come together at venues including elementary school gymnasiums, libraries, and citizens’ public halls to engage in voluntary activities such as sports, crafts, and reading. In addition, on non-school days including the weekend and summer vacation, children participate in hands-on activities outside of school as well.

Activities are developed with the active participation and cooperation of community residents, particularly for traditions such as community functions and traditional games carried out by the senior citizens’ club and guidance on “new sports” by Physical Education leaders.

The Classroom also focuses on sharing information. Each month a “Community Classroom Calendar” is distributed to all children and a “Community Classroom Newsletter” is published for children's parents and guardians, schools, and community residents to share information on children in the community.
