UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a programme operated by UNESCO with financial contribution from the Government of Japan. The Prize was officially announced at the UNESCO World Conference on ESD (10-12 November 2014, Aichi-Nagoya, Japan) and started in 2015. The prize awards once per biennium since 2020, while it was annually awarded until 2019.

1.Purpose

・The purpose of the Prize is to reward the outstanding efforts of institutions, organizations or other entities engaged in activities on ESD.
・This has been operated within the framework “Education for Sustainable Development: Towards achieving the SDGs (ESD for 2030)”.

2.Prize

・US $50,000 for each recipient (3 recipient) funded by the Government of Japan biennially

3.Nominations

・Nominations shall be submitted by the governments of Member States, in consultation with the National Commissions, and by non-governmental organizations maintaining official partnerships with UNESCO.
・Each government or non-governmental organization can make up to three nominations.
