  While the statistical survey range varies from country to country,making simple comparisons difficult,it is plain that research expenses in the service industry have been increasing in all countries since the mid-1980s in response to the shift of industrial structure from manufacturing to services in major countries.The figures for services are particularly high in the United States and the United Kingdom (Figure2-1-20).
