4. Language Policy

The basic language policy in the Republic of Korea is to enhance the superiority of the Korean language at home and abroad, to increase the Korean people's understanding of their own language, and to improve the Korean language.

The National Academy of Korean Language was established in 1990 through a presidential directive in order to play a central role in making the Republic of Korea's language policies and in contributing to the development of the Korean language.

The National Academy of Korean Language prepares basic materials concerning the Republic of Korea's language policies, and defines the standard usage of the Korean language. The National Academy of Korean Language also introduces Korean literature abroad and establishes textbooks for foreigners to learn the Korean language.
