Chapter 4 Cultural Policies of Other Countries
Section 4: Cultural Policies of China
4. Promotion of Cultural Exchange Programs between Japan and the People's Republic of China

Many believe that Japan is the most important country in the cultural exchange programs of the People's Republic of China.

In particular, the year 1999 was designated as the "Year of Japan-the People's Republic of China: Friendship and Cultural Exchange in 1999," marking the 20th anniversary of the conclusion of the Cultural Exchange Programs Agreement between Japan and China, and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the People's Republic of China. High-level representatives of both countries exchanged visits with one another during the year. In addition, various cultural activities took place during 1999, such as the performance of musical and Terpsichorean arts in China and the Beijing Opera in Japan.

In addition, the year 2002, which marks the 30th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China, is expected to be an important milestone in Japan-China relations. Both governments plan to implement and support various cultural exchange activities to commemorate the anniversary.
